General Surgeon – Job Description
Job Title: General Surgeon / Consultant – General Surgery
Department: Surgery / OT
Reports To: Medical Director / Head of Surgery
Location: Multispeciality Hospital / Surgical Centre
Job Summary
The General Surgeon is responsible for diagnosing and surgically treating a wide range of diseases and injuries. The role includes performing elective and emergency surgeries, managing inpatient and outpatient care, and ensuring high-quality pre-operative and post-operative patient management.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment
Evaluate patients with surgical conditions through OPD, IPD, and emergency visits.
Take detailed medical history and perform physical examinations.
Diagnose conditions requiring surgical or non-surgical intervention.
Surgical Responsibilities
Perform a variety of surgeries such as:
Appendectomy
Hernia Repair (open & laparoscopic)
Gallbladder Surgery (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy)
Piles, Fistula, Fissure surgeries
Thyroid, Breast surgeries
Trauma and emergency surgeries
Abdominal surgeries
Provide pre-operative planning, surgical execution, and post-operative care.
Diagnostic & Treatment Responsibilities
Order and interpret investigations such as labs, ultrasound, CT, MRI, X-ray.
Decide between surgical, medical, or conservative treatment options.
Prescribe medications and advise lifestyle modifications when needed.
Post-Operative Management
Monitor patients in recovery and wards.
Manage pain, wound care, complications, and follow-up visits.
Ensure proper documentation of surgical notes and discharge summaries.
Emergency & Trauma Care
Handle emergency cases like acute abdomen, bleeding, trauma injuries, perforations, and infections.
Participate in the hospital’s emergency response team.
Coordination & Communication
Work closely with anesthesiologists, nurses, radiologists, gastroenterologists, and ICU staff.
Maintain clear communication with patients and their families regarding treatment plans.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and audits.
Required Qualifications
MBBS from a recognized institution.
MS General Surgery or DNB General Surgery (mandatory).
Valid State Medical Council Registration.
Training in laparoscopic surgery (preferred).
Key Skills
Strong surgical skills (open & laparoscopic).
Excellent diagnostic and decision-making ability.
Ability to handle emergencies and trauma efficiently.
Good communication and patient counseling skills.
Teamwork, empathy, and professional ethics.
Knowledge of latest surgical techniques and equipment.
Work Experience
Fresh MS/DNB candidates to experienced surgeons (0–20+ years).
Experience in tertiary care hospital preferred.
